Thousands Prepared to Brave the Desert for 2011 Burning Man Festival

Burning Man

From August 29 to September 5th of this year, thousands of intrepid souls will brave the hot, dry conditions of northern Nevada and congregate in the Black Rock Desert, about 120 miles north of Reno, for the world-famous Burning Man festival.

Since its inception in 1986, the week-long event has become one of the most popular and creative festivals of its kind, drawing over 50,000 participants in 2010.

The organizers of Burning Man take note to mention that is not a rave, but rather an "experiment in temporary community" dedicated to "self-expression." That said, many elements of the festival, from its all-night dance parties to roster of inventive DJs, bear many of the hallmarks of a traditional rave.

If you go wearing your glow sticks or other rave gear, you won't be the only one. Just make sure to bring plenty of water and prepare for what will be the most intense and fascinating experience of your life.
